National Studies

In addition to conducting its own studies, ALT also assists the University System in participating in national studies of information technology in higher education. These studies provide benchmarks used by the University System Office and campuses in making decisions about information and instructional technology.

Campus Computing Project

Begun in 1990, The Campus Computing Project is the largest continuing study of the role of information technology in American higher education. The project's national studies draw on qualitative and quantitative data to help inform faculty, campus administrators, and others interested in the use of information technology in American colleges and universities. Since 2002, all 34 USG institutions have participated in the Campus Computing Study. Campus CIOs receive custom reports that compare their answers to the survey to those of their USG peers, benchmarking peers, aspirational peers, and national Carnegie peers.

Educause Core Data Survey

The Educause Core Data Survey is another response to the ongoing need for comparison data about campus information technology environments and practices to help campuses and systems benchmark, plan, and make decisions about IT. Since 2004, all USG institutions have been encouraged to complete the survey. Institutions that are members of Educause are given access to the online data reporting tool.
