Study Title: Roles of Faculty in Teaching Asynchronous Undergraduate Courses

Study Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to explore from the faculty perspective challenges, roles, benefits, and attitudes towards teaching online. The population for this study included tenured or tenure-track faculty members teaching undergraduate and lower-division college courses in a totally asynchronous environment. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight faculty members during Spring semester 2002, following an preliminary survey of 35 online instructors. This study sought to capture the online instructional experience in the faculty member's own words.
