ALT Project: Course Mapping Tool

Project Description

The course mapping tool has been developed as a two-tiered approach to transitioning courses to, or creating courses for, the online environment. Constructed with both designer and user options, designers can pre-define a variety of course structures while faculty, as users, can easily enter their existing instructional content into a given course structure.

The course mapping tool uses a wizard-style approach for either developing a course structure or entering course content and allows for a preview before either view is finalized. When satisfied with their results, designers will have a course structure that can be easily exported and downloaded into the user tool. Users end up with a detailed instructional course map that can be exported into Word, enhanced with specific course content in Word and then exported into an HTML editor for migration to the online environment.

Potential applications for this tool include:

  • Providing specific course structures for adjunct faculty to follow;
  • Ensuring course consistency across basic-level courses;
  • Offering alternative teaching techniques and strategies to faculty;
  • Preparing to move content from a traditional, face-to-face course to the online environment.

Sample Outlines

Once you have access to the course mapping tool, two sample outlines are available with the tool.  If, for some reason, you find you do not have access to these outlines, you may download the files here.  Then simply take the one labeled “designer” and drag it into the designer program files folder.  Then drag the “user” one into the user files folder.  Then re-open the programs and the sample outlines should be there.
